Calculate the realised result on a disposal after fees on both sides, with the holding period and the gain per unit.

A realised result is proceeds minus cost basis, with fees on both sides included. Simple enough in principle, and routinely reported wrong because the fees are left out of one side or the other.

This calculates it properly and records the holding period in days alongside it. The holding period is flagged against a 365-day reference point purely because many jurisdictions distinguish somewhere around there - the flag is a reference, not a tax conclusion, and the thresholds and treatment differ everywhere.

Tax rules differ by country and by asset. Holding periods, rates, loss offsets and reporting obligations are all jurisdiction specific - the 365-day flag is only a reference point, not a tax conclusion.

This tool does not calculate tax owed. Take the figures to a qualified tax professional or your local tax authority guidance.

How to use the crypto gain and loss calculator

  1. Enter the quantity disposed of and the buy and sell prices per unit.
  2. Enter the fees paid on acquisition and on disposal.
  3. Enter the number of days the position was held.
  4. Take the result to a tax professional rather than treating it as a tax figure.

What people use this for

  • Recording the realised result on a disposal for your own records.
  • Checking an exchange statement against what the disposal produced.
  • Seeing what fees on both sides cost across a round trip.
  • Preparing a summary for a tax professional.

Fees on both sides

Acquisition fees generally increase the cost basis and disposal fees generally reduce the proceeds. Both reduce the reported gain, and both are frequently omitted - usually the disposal side, because it is charged at the moment of sale and easy to overlook.

On high-frequency activity the aggregate effect across a year is substantial.

The holding period flag is a reference, not a conclusion

Many jurisdictions distinguish between shorter and longer holdings, and 365 days is a common boundary. That is why the flag exists.

It is not a statement about your tax position. Thresholds, rates, the treatment of crypto specifically, loss offset rules and reporting obligations all differ by jurisdiction, and several treat crypto quite differently from shares.

What counts as a disposal is a local question

Selling for currency is obviously a disposal. Whether swapping one token for another, spending crypto, bridging, wrapping, or receiving staking rewards counts as one differs by jurisdiction - and the differences are large.

This calculator computes the arithmetic of a disposal you have identified. Identifying which events are disposals is a question for a qualified professional or your local tax authority.

Methodology and assumptions

What this calculator does, and what it deliberately does not do.

  • Results are arithmetic on the numbers you enter. Nothing here predicts prices or connects to an exchange, broker or market data feed.
  • Nothing you type is transmitted or stored - the calculation runs entirely inside your browser.

This tool is for informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute financial or investment advice. Past performance does not guarantee future results.

Nothing on this website is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security, currency, derivative or digital asset. No price is predicted and no return is promised or implied.

Trading and investing carry the risk of substantial loss, including the loss of your entire capital. Leveraged products can produce losses that exceed your deposit. Tax treatment depends on your jurisdiction and your circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tell me what tax I owe?

No. It calculates a realised gain or loss. It applies no tax rate, assumes no jurisdiction, and is not tax advice.

Is a crypto-to-crypto swap a disposal?

In many jurisdictions yes, in some no. It is exactly the kind of question that needs local guidance rather than a general answer.

What if I only sold part of my holding?

Use the cost basis for the units disposed of. The FIFO comparison tool shows how much that figure changes depending on the method used.

Can I use this for shares?

The arithmetic is identical. The tax treatment frequently is not.
